Victor Stoll, Alan Troyer and I stopped by the DRU this afternoon,
7-29-17 for the first time in several weeks.
We were hoping for some shorebirds, of course, but weren't able to find
much suitable habitat with all around high water and no exposed mud.
Pool 2 was the only place we found any numbers at all, with Least,
Pectoral and Spotted Sandpipers and both Yellowlegs present, about 35
shorebirds total.
At the Heron Island we had an ANHINGA high count, with 2 pairs of adults
seen, as well as 4 large youngsters in the one visible nest, for a total of
8 ANHINGAS.
One of the adult males was making trips feeding babies, both females were
relaxing and sunning on the island, and the second male came in and
disappeared on the island as we watched. (Second nest with young?)
We also had a high count of CATTLE EGRETS, with a total of 212 counted
feeding along Haul Rd., on the Island, and with cows in the uplands.
