Scott Somershoe and I visited several clear cuts in east-central Wayne County this morning. At one location, along Hwy. 99 about 4 miles north of Hwy. 64, we found one non-singing Bachman's Sparrow. The bird responded quickly to song play-back, perched in a young pine tree for a few seconds, then flew into the grasses, weeds and brush near the ground. Several attempts to relocate the bird failed. This site is one of the locations where Bill Pulliam and I had one bird last summer. Habitat at all the clear cuts visited, including the Hwy. 99 site, appeared very marginal for Bachman's Sparrows. Most of the sites consisted of fairly dense broomsedge with dense patches of blackberries scattered throughout. There appeared to be only small areas of bare ground and minimal forb cover. One site was probably too young for Bachman's, consisting of lots of bare ground and minimal forbs and grasses. That site, on Meat Road north of Waynesboro, will definitely be a target next summer. Other birds seen during the morning included numerous Blue-winged (indicating older, more dense vegetation) and Prairie Warblers, 2 Palm Warblers, several Hooded Warblers, Common Yellowhroats and Yellow-breasted Chats. A fly-over Sharp-shinned Hawk at one of the sites was also a treat. Two Swamp Sparrows, at the same site as the Bachman's, were a surprise. The site was high and dry, with no swamp habitat in sight. I've had Lincoln's Sparrows on several occasions at clear cuts, but we got good looks at these rusty adults...ID confirmed without doubt.
