It may still seem a ways off, but the Christmas Bird Count season starts in just over two months and it is not too early to start planning. I have put in the application for a new Big Sandy count circle, centered around the Big Sandy Unit of Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge. The proposed circle extends from the town of Big Sandy north to Paris Landing State Park, including all of the Big Sandy Unit (Pace Point, Britton Ford, etc.), Lick Creek WMA, and many surrounding areas. It has the potential to be one of Tennessee's top count circles in total species diversity and numbers of wintering water birds.
I am scheduling the count for Sunday, 12/14/2014, opening day of this year's CBC period. Please let me know directly (not on the list, please) if you might be interested in participating. If you would love to participate but that date is impossible for you, also let me know. There are many conflicts with establishing a new CBC, and it is impossible to accommodate everyone's schedules. But if a strong enough case can be made, the date could be shifted.
