A total of 10 observers assembled yesterday in fine mild December weather for the Big Sandy Christmas Bird Count in Benton and Henry Counties, TN. The count circle spans from Paris Landing State Park south to the town of Big Sandy, and includes essentially all of the Big Sandy Unit of Tennessee NWR. This is our second year for this young CBC. We found a preliminary total of 112 species this year, exceeding the total of 109 on last year's inaugural count. There were quite a few good finds, including at least SIX (!) Pacific Loons scattered all throughout the area and 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (totals from one party are still not yet tabulated). Other goodies include Red-throated Loon, Western Grebe, Thayer's and Great Black- backed Gull, House Wren, and Orange-crowned Warbler. Waterfowl numbers were moderate by local standards, with only 400 geese and no Cackling Geese, about 43,000 puddle ducks, roughly 5,000 diving ducks, and no rare waterfowl species detected. Notable after a complete strikeout on the species last year, this year there were at least 497 Am. White Pelicans.

Thanks to all who participated. Every single party had some unique finds that boosted the final total!
