While practicing "social distancing," in late morning I went to the viewing
area of the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge in Meigs County at Birchwood. The refuge
is now open for visitors to walk around inside the fences. I didn't see many
species, but at least one Osprey was noted along with a pair of Mallards and a
pair of Wood Ducks. From the refuge, I drove toward Blythe's Ferry, also in
Meigs County at Birchwood. Between where Shadden Road intersects with Blythe
Ferry Road and Blythe's Ferry, there is a large pond beside Blythe Ferry Road.
On that pond I saw at least three Blue-winged Teals, a first-of-the-year
species for me. One Redhead duck, at least two female Ring-necked ducks, and a
Green-winged Teal were also observed on that pond.
