While walking on the Belle Meade Golf Course in Nashville this weekend just after sunset, I saw a number of Black-Crowned Herons in the creek, which is very low. I returned the next evening and saw an adult with an immature. When leaving, I rounded a corner and came face to face with a Red-tailed Hawk who was in the process of eating a squirrel on the ground. I froze in my tracks and watched for at least 5 minutes from a mere 4 or 5 feet away. Occasionally he would stop and check me out, then return to eating. Definitely the closest encounter I've ever had with a wild hawk! Kim Bailey
