Dec. 7, 2008
TVA Lake, MS RV
Shelby Co.
Tipton Co. Runabout

While looking at the sleeping Long-tailed Duck this morning on TVA Lake, in
floated a Black Scoter. One Surf Scoter was there for a while but a Bald Eagle
got everything up and it did not set back down.

On the Mississippi River from Mud Island, I saw another Common Loon, 2
Lesser Scaup, a single Ruddy and 550 Ring-billed Gulls plus 2 immature Herring.

I made a long run up the river and circled through Tipton Co, and had 9
Loggerhead Shrikes (looking for a biggie), at Ballard Slough there was another
200 Ring-bills and 65 American White Pelicans. Coming back to the house on
Highway 14 just north of 179, I saw 4 hawks perched around a field where 4
tractors were bush hogging ditches and cotton stubble. They were playing tag
with
scurrying Cotton Rats. In the top of one small tree sat a light morph
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. Pretty poor photos of the distant bird but in the late
afternoon
light in flight it was a beauty.
