Aug. 17-18, 2002 Mississippi River It was a case of one good tern deserving another and another and another, this weekend along the Mississippi River. It started early Saturday at the Dacus Bar on the river front in Memphis with 23 Black Terns, 1 Forster's and 21 Least Terns. Then 3 Black Terns at the pits plus 6 Least Terns of which 4 were juveniles. I crossed over into Arkansas to head to the Reelfoot area and had close to 80 Black Terns, 9 Least Terns and a distant molting sterna type, on a quick stop at Wapannoca NWR. At the I-155 bridge landing in Dyer County, I counted 190 Black Terns and 7 Least Terns. There I ran into the support group of a Slovenian (Martin Strel) that is swimming down the Mississippi River. I waited and very soon he swam into view escorted by 2 kayaks and a larger boat. He came in for a quick lunch and was back into the water in under 20 minutes. He makes 40 to 50 miles a day and will stop in Memphis on Monday. He will finish his 2360 mile swim in 66 days on September 7. If interested I have other details of this remarkable swimmer. He was really chugging. At White Lake I had 3 Least Terns and at Reelfoot Lake I found 5 Black Terns, 4 Least Terns, 1 Caspian and a distant sterna type. Back on the Mississippi at Tiptonville landing we had over 200 Black Terns, 5 Caspian, 2 Common, 1 Forster's, 3 other sterna and 13 Least terns using the high numbers from 3 visits. Further down river in the bend I counted 180+ Black Terns, 5 Least, 3 Ring-billed Gulls and finally at Island 13 over 40 Least and 3 Black. I looked at swarming Black Terns until cross eyed and not a White-winged in the bunch. E-Tern-ally yours and Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
