Around 3 pm Sunday, we walked to the far end of the boat dock @ Volunteer landing. After observing Barn & Rough-winged Swallows working the river, Leigh spotted a Black Crowned Night Heron roosting in a nearby tree beside the water. Upon further review, I found another Black Crowned Night Heron down low near the water?s edge within 30 feet of the other heron. On a noon trip just prior to Sequoyah Park , we saw a Common Tern, an Osprey in the large nest at the sand barge area, 35 Great Blue Herons flying over the water, 13 Great Blue Herons seen on nests @ the rookery, Rough-winged Swallows, & Blue-grey Gnatcatchers. Sharp?s Ridge trips Friday evening, Saturday morning & Sunday morning yielded a beautiful orange/ black American Redstart, Blue Headed Vireo, 2 Hooded Warblers, Black Throated Green Warblers, Black & White Warblers, 2 Red-breasted Nuthatches, B-G Gnatcatchers, & a Prairie Warbler up close & personal (with the help of Richard Smith?s good ear?). Ovenbirds were heard also. The Common Loon reported last week at Adair Park was still on the small pond this past Saturday. For anyone interested in seeing Minnesota?s state bird, you can get within 20 ft. of this beautiful bird.
