I birded Seven Islands refuge in east Knox County, Tenn. today from just
before noon until almost 3 p.m. Upon getting out of my car I heard the
unmistakeable, tedious two noted song of a black capped chickadee coming
from a tree just before the parking lot. Sure enough, I located the
chickadee singing the monotonous song. It was with a couple of other
chickadees, one of which I also believe was a black cap based upon its
vocalization (not the 2-noted song but a truncated, slower vesion of the
Carolina's chickadee-dee-dee) and the other a Carolina. There may have been
more. They were not there, or at least not singing or flying around, when I
left almost 3 hours later. I know there are black caps in the Smokies but
was surprised to find them at 7 Islands.
I was also excited to see a pileated woodpecker (female) calling and flying
from tree to tree at the far end of the paved path (where I was sitting on a
concrete block, getting up the energy to trek back to the car).
