As I mentioned in the quick post, no sign of Black-headed or Bonaparte's at
Pace Point. Heard 2nd-hand that Terry may be 2nd-guessing his original ID
though, I'm sure he will elaborate; just a heads-up for anyone considering
coming over, since I think it has been awhile since we've had one.

Lots of gulls around, and it is a great time for Sabine's (just saw where one
was found on KY Lake today in KY waters). There were several Common Terns at
Pace Point amongst the Forster's and Caspians. I didn't spend any time with
passerines at all today.

Made a quick trip into the Big Sandy flats at the mouth of the river. Vast area
of flats here, with lots of egrets, gulls, and pelicans, but practically no
shorebirds. The mud is pretty fresh, may not be really productive for feeding
yet,, but hardly anything even resting here. If only TVA would drop the lake a
month earlier, we could have a bonanza like Rankin here.....Killdeer was the
only numerous shorebird, with the highlight being a single Black-bellied Plover
feeding up high on the flats in the distance, which have been exposed longer.
Otherwise, a couple of Lesser Yellowlegs and small flight of Least Sandpipers.

Highlight of the day was a 3 and a half foot Timber Rattler on the road out
towards the Refuge from Big Sandy. This is the first live Timber Rattler I've
seen in west TN, though I've seen a couple of road kills in this same area. I
was afraid it had been hit, but it was mostly off the road before I got turned
around and make it back. My camera timing if off a bit of late, totally didn't
get a shot of the awesome Broad-winged flight, and only caught the back half of
the Rattlesnake today.

I've added a couple of photos, one of the Rattler and one of terns and gulls at
Pace.
