I waited for the weather to clear so I didn't get to Cove Lake State Park in Campbell County, TN until noon today, October 5. I spent 4 hours there and was seeing so many birds that I didn't even make it onto the trail into the woods. There were good birds to be found in many areas but the best place to find them was in the trees around the parking lot at the far end of the park. Thrushes in particular were attracted to the berry bearing trees there; for a while I just sat at a picnic bench under the trees and let the birds come to me. A WOOD THRUSH sat out in the open eating a berry. At least 2 (and probably more) SWAINSON'S THRUSHES and at least one GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH along with AMERICAN ROBINS and a SCARLET TANAGER were feasting on the berries, I actually saw a Gray Cheeked Thrush twice though it may have been the same one each time as the sightings were in the same general area. When I first started out walking on the path one flew up from the ground and landed atop a small shrub right in front of me. The second sighting was a couple of hours later as I was sitting on the bench.... the Gray-Cheeked Thrush stood on a branch just a few feet away, completely exposed for a few seconds. It had no noticeable eye ring. That same area was also full of Palm Warblers, mostly feeding on the ground. Saw my first YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS of the season. One group of four and then another pair, all bathing in mud puddles. The only waterfowl other than Canada Geese and Mallards were a pied billed grebe and WOOD DUCKS... the Woodies were all on the far side of the lake; I had to go get my scope to ID them. I counted 38, at least 35 of which were breeding plumaged Males. Just 2 or 3 females that I could discern.
