cranes to BBC (Tuesday)

CRANE WOMAN, VICKIE HENDERSON, COMING TO BBC

Vickie Henderson, an artist, writer, and extremely-talented

wildlife photographer from Knoxville, TN, will be the speaker

for the Bristol Bird Club's Tuesday, Feb 16, meeting, at 7:30.

She will bring her passionate love for

the Sandhill Cranes and her years of

experience observing and photographing

the large birds which winter in southeast

Tennessee at Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge.

Vickie was a determined and successful

advocate for the cranes last month when

she, and a small group of conservationists

from the Tennessee Ornithological Society,

were joined by hunters across the state to implored the Tennessee

Wildlife Resources Agency's policy-making commission to delay

an impending crane hunting season. She worked tirelessly

and traveled great distances, even in severe weather, to advance

the Sandhill agenda of no hunting until we have an appropriate

plan for the species. The commission extended that request for

the next two years.

Now she comes to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service requesting

that USFWS: 1) re-evaluate the Management Plan for the

Eastern Population of Sandhill Cranes to examine its underlying

science; and 2) remove the Plan objective that provides for

"hunting opportunities for EP sandhill cranes" until science is

adequate to monitor the population, and a system is in place to

include input from hunters and non-hunters who do not wish to

see this population hunted.

Her presentation will, without a doubt, be one of the most

informative, educational, entertaining and beautiful presentations

the Bristol Bird Club will have enjoyed in decades. It will be

something special. BBC is anticipating a large crowd in the

second floor meeting room at the Bristol Public Library.

Vickie will travel Tuesday afternoon from Knoxville in time to

join our members who gather to have dinner at the Mad Greek

Restaurant at 6 p.m. She will be happy to see and meet

everyone. You will have a chance to visit with her on a more

personal basis. She will drive home to Knoxville following her

program so there will be little time for her to linger afterwards.

She will have a PowerPoint presentation for our birders. You

will love her presentation. You will love Vickie.

She is an international blogger. Her blog is one of the most

beautiful and fascinating sites.

Vickie's photographs adorn the blog site of the famous

Julie Zickefoose of Birdwatchers Digest and a writer,

naturalist, and National Public Radio (NPR) commentator.

Come join the Bristol Bird Club:

Tuesday, 15 Feb (next week)

7:30 p.m.

Bristol Public Library (upstairs)

program open and free to the public.
