Soddy Mtn Hawk Watch
Hamilton Co., Tn.

Today we kicked off our 2012 hawk watch season. We started a little late in
the day
but was still able to pull out a small kettle of 4-5 Broadwings. This kettle
had at least
four distant specks for sure and another much darker bird in the same grouping.
The
darker bird could have been a dark morph Broad-winged Hawk but we were never
certain due to the distance. We also had a Sharp-shinned Hawk and a Cooper's
Hawk.
At three forty five we had two adult Bald Eagles fly from south to north and
then west-
ward before they disappeared. Also, on the not countable list were several
local Turkey
Vultures, Black Vultures, a Red-tailed Hawk and a possible distant
Red-shouldered Hawk.

Tuesday of this week I have to go to Nashville for a Dr.'s appointment and then
again the
following week also on Tuesday otherwise I plan to be on the lookout as much as
possible
through the end of September. I'm retired now and I have a new cell phone # it
is
423-305-2766. If your thinking of coming up you might wish to phone ahead to
find out
whats happening.

The directions in the CHATT for the field trip Sept. 22 & 23 are wrong. Near
the end of the
directions you are advised to turn left on Ledford Rd. if you do you will never
find us. Ledford
is the second road from the bridge crossing Hwy. 111 you need to go to the
fourth left and
turn and proceed to the dead end.

Directions: From downtown Chattanooga we are about 38 minutes from the
Tennessee
Aquarium. From downtown on Hwy. 27 cross the river then drive 30 minutes until
you reach
Soddy-Daisy. While still on Hwy. 27 cross the Soddy Lake causeway (water on
both sides of
the road) in a short distance two right lanes go to Dayton while two left lanes
become Hwy.111
stay on Hwy.111 to the top of the mountain. The first exit is Jones Gap Rd.
take the exit ramp
and then turn left crossing the bridge over Hwy.111. In two miles you will
approach the fourth
left turn which is also JONES GAP RD. After you've turned left proceed to the
dead end. We
are on top of the small left bank approaching the dead end. note: if you
continue straight
instead of turning left onto Jones Gap Rd. you will now be or Burchard Rd. and
the nasty voice
on your TomTom will be telling you to turn around!

There are no rest room facilities near by. Bring water, food, sunscreen, a
hat, a chair and
binoculars if you have them. We see more hawks if you are eating a tuna
sandwich another
good alternate hawk bait is peanut butter and dill pickle (sliced long way)
sandwiches.
