Martha Rudolph and I birded in Cades Cove, mainly around the
Sparks Lane area. The Cove was very crowded. The drive time
for the Loop was 2-3 hours. Here's the list:
Wood Duck 2 (sewage ponds)
Mallard 1 (sewage ponds)
BLUE-WINGED TEAL 3 (sewage ponds)
Wild Turkey 26
PIED-BILLED GREBE 1 (sewage ponds)
Great Blue Heron 1
Black Vulture 1
Turkey Vulture 5
NORTHERN HARRIER 2 (male and female - Hyatt lane)
Red-shouldered Hawk 1
American Kestrel 2
Mourning Dove 2
Belted Kingfisher 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker 3
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER 1 (FOS)
Downy Woodpecker 1
Northern Flicker 10 (a "flock")
Pileated Woodpecker 2
Eastern Phoebe 5
Blue-headed Vireo 1
Blue Jay 36 (one flock of 30)
American Crow 18
Carolina Chickadee 2
Tufted Titmouse 1
White-breasted Nuthatch 1
Carolina Wren 6
Swainson's Thrush 1
Wood Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 5
Brown Thrasher 1
European Starling 7
Palm Warbler 19 (everywhere)
Common Yellowthroat 2
Eastern Towhee 4
