I returned to Cades cove for the first time in over a month this morning and saw the Sandhill crane that has been reported off and on since June. It was feeding in the field on the left shortly before the first donation box. I have heard reports of it in the fields near both Sparks and Hyatt Lanes and the sewage ponds. Birding was VERY slow with few birds observed while driving the loop drive and working in the Cable Mill area. Birds seen or heard were: Sandhill crane 1 Wild turkey 8 Crow 20+ E. bluebird 2 Goldfinch 2 Downing woodpecker 2 White-breasted nuthatch 3 Eastern phoebe 1 Carolina chickadee 2 Black-throated green warbler 1 Tufted titmouse 3 Hairy woodpecker 1 Wood duck 36 Warren Bielenberg Maryville **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go.
