I visited Cades Cove and nearby areas Sunday from 8:30-4:00 with my mother hoping to find some early Spring migrants and check how the wildflowers were doing. A damp morning turned into a nice, sunny day and I caught a few FOS birds but missed Yellow-Thr. Warbler and Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher. Black-Thr. Greens seemed to be the most numerous with many heard. I also got a lifer in Wilson's Snipe--if they hadn't moved I never would have seen them. The flowers at Chestnut Top Trail just inside the park are coming along with Sweet White Trillium blooming. This is only my 2nd year looking at wildflowers and i've noticed the pace is much slower than last year with the cooler, wetter conditions we've had. There were Tiger Swallowtail butterflies everywhere and 1 Monarch(i think--it was large and orange). We also saw a reddish colored bat catching insects over the sewage ponds in broad daylight(~2 pm). I didn't know any bats did this. Here are some of the birds noted. Black-Thr. Green Warbler - 3 seen, several more heard (FOS) Black and White Warbler - 1 heard (FOS) Louisiana Waterthrush - 1 seen, few more heard (FOS) Blue-Headed Vireo - 1 seen, 1 heard (FOS) E. Phoebe Chipping Sparrow E. Meadowlark C. Grackle E.Bluebird Pileated W.P. Red-Shouldered Hawk - 1 Wild Turkey Sewage Ponds (~1:00-2:30) Blue-Winged Teal - 7 Bufflehead - 46 Mallard - 2 Wood Duck - 12 (FOS) Canada Goose - 2 Killdeer - 1 Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 (FOS) Wilson's Snipe - 4 (lifer) Shane Williams - Knoxville, TN _____________________________________________________________ Netscape.
