The Calliope Hummingbird was still at the McMillan's (see Harold Howell's earlier two emails) at noon today. Good directions are available in his latest email (from last night--Wed about 10:30). Several (Jean Alexander, Charlie Muise. the McMillans) saw the bird at the feeders this morning from 7:30 to 8:30. Many of us waited patiently until for over an hour or more without seeing the bird--some left during that period in frustration. But just as I was getting in my car to go at 11:00, Boyd Sharp hollared at me, "There he is!" The bird was feeding on a patch of Salvia in the yard. Five minutes later it appeared at the feeder and most of us there (Boyd, Harold Howell, the McMillans, and I) got good looks. For the next hour (at least), the hummer appeared at the feeder and at Salvia at about 10 minute intervals. Harold got a number of pictures. And the McMillans already have numerous good pictures and a video. For any doubters out there, the bird is clearly an adult male Calliope Hummingbird. Very complete purple to magenta (depending on the light) gorget; clear breast except for small greenish patches on the side; very small bird with very short tail; primaries distinctly longer than tail; greenish on top of head and back. Gorgeous bird. Thanks so much to the MacMillan's for reporting the bird and for their exceptional hospitality. Thanks to Harold Howell for notifying everyone on TN-birds. And thanks to Boyd for hollerin' at me. Dev Joslin Oak Ridge Roane Co., TN P.S. For butterfly lovers, there was also a Long-tailed Skipper on the Salvia. =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net is owned by the Tennessee Ornithological Society Neither the society(TOS) nor its moderator(s) endorse the views or opinions expressed by the members of this discussion group.
