A single male Canvasback was observed in Washington County from the ramp leading onto I-181 from Boone's Creek Road going in the direction of Gray. This may be a little tricky with traffic. Just at the top of the ramp there is a body of water to the right, requiring one to pull over close to the guardrail to avoid getting hit. There were 10 Ring-necked Dusks, several Mallards and 4 Canada Geese as well. The Canvasback was spotted at the far left corner of this rectangular inlet. I saw some white through the binoculars, figured it was probably a farm duck, but checked it out with the scope just in case, and bingo. This is the first Canvasback I've seen in East Tennessee, where they are rare. In fact an almost equally rare one at Hiwassee in January was the first I'd seen in the Eastern Time Zone, so for anyone keeping county lists, this is a good bird. It almost sounds like a personals column entry: "Single white male Canvasback wishes to meet....."
