Carolina Wrens nest on a bathroom window sill, outside of the screen and inside the hinged window. The current nest had four eggs. Before the eggs hatched we found one of the eggs on the window sill, with a 2 mm hole punched in the shell.* We had a House Wren singing vigorously that day, and suspected it. We check the nest from time to time with a dental mirror. One egg hatched at least a few days before the other two. Today there were two young of very different sizes, and no sign of the other egg. The larger one weighed about 40 grams, the smaller one about 8 grams. The primaries on the larger one appear full length and the last 5mm or so are out of the sheaths. We are curious. Is such a large difference in size unusual? Photo available if you are interested. David and Gloria Patterson Houston Lane Ooltewah, Hamilton County, TN 07/18/07 *David set the punctured egg on the picnic table where we were eating lunch. Gloria absent-mindedly picked it up and put it in her mouth and started to chew it! She may be the only person in recent history to eat a raw Carolina Wren egg. In the interest of science she reports that it did not taste good, and she spit it out right away. =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
