4 June 2011 The Herndon chapter of TOS conducted the 18th annual Carter County Summer Bird Count this past Saturday. Twenty observers in 6 parties tallied 115 species and 6423 individuals. The species number is slightly above the average of 112 (range = 105 - 118). The number of individuals is an all-time high for this count, probably due (at least, in part) to an all-time high number of party-hours (69 + 5 hrs nocturnal). Several species had record or near record high counts (same caveat). The summer count was initiated to provide a data set that would compliment other monitoring projects (e.g., BBS, atlases) during the all-important breeding season. Participants: Aubrie Abernethy, Jim Anderson, Rob Biller, Ron Carico, Jeff Chynoweth, Glen Eller, Harry Lee Farthing, Sylvia Fraust, Rick Knight, Roy Knispel, Joe McGuiness, Tom McNeil, Eric & Kathy Noblet, Brookie & Jean Potter, Bryan Stevens, Kim Stroud, Michele von Bergen, Mary Anna Wheat.
