10 June 2009 Nashville-Davidson County, TN I have been surprised over the past couple weeks at birds I have heard in my yard, three miles from downtown Nashville between Hillsboro Road and Belmont Boulevard. I reported earlier on an Acadian Flycatcher that spent a day here, around 01 June, and this past weekend, for two days, I heard an Eastern Wood-Pewee. But for three weeks now I have been observing, hearing and seeing, Gray Catbirds. I haven't found a nest, but I suspect there is one nearby. I hear the cat-like "meyew" every morning at first light. I hear one singing mornings and evenings. I see a pair lurking and flying low from dense shrub to shrub in the yard. Over the years, we have allowed the vegetation to grow up, turning mowed lawn to perennial garden, shrubs, thickets. I think the results are not only more privacy for us, but more habitat for Catbirds. At least I hope so.
