I'm getting a few reports in on the Knox County Spring Count
which was held Saturday, 3 May 2008. The rain and storms
mostly fizzled by the time it got here. A few good birds
have been reported so far, the best being a CATTLE EGRET.

Jean Alexander, David Johnson, and June Welch had several
good birds at the UT Plant Science Farm as usual. The CATTLE
EGRET was probably the best find. They called to tell me
about it while I was on my way to make the rounds of the
lake parks on Northshore Dr. My first stop was Lakeshore
Park to look for Fish Crow since all three of our counters
in that area were out of town. No luck with the Fish Crows
but one of the first birds I saw was the CATTLE EGRET. This
is just upriver and across river from the UTPSF so almost
certainly the same bird. It had a little brown wash on the
breast but not in full-breeding plumage. This is very close
to the Lyon's Island rookery.

Some other goodies reported so far:

Least and Western Sandpipers, Wilson's Snipe, AMERICAN PIPIT
(getting late), Great Egret, and Brown-headed Nuthatches at
UTPSF.

Whip-poor-will at Seven Islands by Ben Mooney who was camping
there with a group of Powell High School students from his
wife's AP Biology class.

Bank Swallow: I had one at the traditional nesting colony in the
mine tailings in east Knox Co just after the rain. Then 2 in
with about 40 Cliff Swallows at Concord Park at the Northshore
bridge where boats from Concord Marina pass under.

Ring-billed Gull, only 1 at Admiral Farragut Park on Northshore.

Eurasian Collared-Dove: I had 2 at the usual spot by the church
at the corner of Cecil and Crockett off of the Cherry St exit on
I-40 in east Knoxville.
