A morning of roadside birding in the general vicinity of home in western Lewis County this morning (6/7/2011) produced 16 species of warblers, including one Cerulean along Cane Creek Road, a new location for the species for me. I also had a mystery Vermivora. The bird was glimpsed very briefly on a power line but flew before I got my binoculars on it. Its song was about half Blue-winged and half Golden-winged. It began with a typical Blue-winged long introductory "seeeeee" but then followed this with two short higher- pitched buzzes that were much like the terminal "buzz-buzz-buzz"es of the Golden-wing, though shorter in duration. So, putting it together, it was "seeeeeeeeee-biz-biz" ("biz" notes higher). I'm going to try to get a real look at the bird tomorrow; I did attempt to record the song today but have not yet checked to see what I got. Those of you who have experience with the Blue-wing X Golden-wing hybrids, is this the sort of song they come up with? Or is it a song that any of you have heard from a full-blooded Blue-wing in the past? Blue-wings nest on our property and I hear their vocal repertoire on a daily basis in April, May, and June, but this song was not familiar to me.
