You have reached Kevin Calhoon with the Chattanooga RBA, sponsored by the Chattanooga Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. This is Update Number #25 made on November 25, 2003. You can call the RBA at 423 -821-4381. I just saw a post on TN-birds that the sixteen Whooping Cranes and their ultralights are finally heading south from Cumberland county. Apparently they left this morning (11/25) so hopefully they will be in the Hiwassee area by tonight. There have been two Whoopers at the Hiwassee refuge since November 17. They are both birds which had been taught the migration route behind ultralights, one in 2001 and the other in 2002. The Selasphorus hummingbird at the Brock residence near the town of McDonald in Bradely co. was still there as of 11/24. (Kevin Calhoon) Here are the directions via John Henderson (John and Dan Jacobson first reported the bird): The hummer is at the home of Bill Brock at #633 Brock Road in SW Bradley County near the community of McDonald, TN (DeLorme p.25). Directions are from I-75 Exit 11, Ooltewah. Go east on Lee Hwy. (US11 & 64) for 6.2 miles and turn right on McDonald Road, stay on McDonald Road going south, crosses RR tracks, for 1.5 mi. to Brock Lane (angles off to left) and go 0.7 mi. to Brock Road. Go straight (or slightly left) and the mailbox will be immediately on the right. It's a long gravelled driveway. Park in front of the garage and stay close as the bird seems quite skiddish. Mr. Brock welcomes birders and there is no need to call. Be considerate of the time and absolutely NO DOGS! The bird has been there for at least a month and comes to the feeder frequently. His phone number is 423-472-3950, if you fill a need to call. (John Henderson) Some good birds have been seen a the Standifer Gap Marsh recently: A BARN OWL was flushed from the edge of the woods by David Patterson on November 17. Always a tough bird to find in Hamilton co. Five plus Virginia Rails were present on November 17. (David Patterson) Three white phase Snow Geese and three blue phase were present on November 16 and one white and three blue were present on November 17. (David Patterson) Migrant waterfowl and other waterbirds have still not arrived in any large numbers. A survey of the Tennessee River from Chickamauga Dam to Woltever Creek on November 24 produced only 7 Common Loons, 25 Ring-billed Gulls and 51 Bonaparte's Gulls. No Common Goldeneye, Greater Scaup, Horned Grebes were seen. (Kevin Calhoon) The first Horned Grebe on the season was seen at Booker T Washington on November 15. (Dan Jacobson) This cold front should push some migrants our way. Several of the creeks mouths with mudflats in Meigs and Bradely counties were surveyed on November 20 (John Henderson). Highlights were: South Mouse Creek (Bradely Count) 1 Dunlin 6 Wilson's Snipe Sugar Creek (Miegs County) 9 Dunlin 12 Least Sandpiper 4 Lesser Yellowlegs Three Snow Geese were seen at Blythe Ferry. A singing Blue-headed Vireo was heard at my residence at Cravens Terrace on November 21 and two male Purple Finchs were at my feeders on November 19. (Kevin Calhoon) The next general meeting of the Chattanooga TOS will be on December 11 7:00 PM at the Accension Luthern Church, 720 South Germantown Rd. Get out in the Field and let me know what you see!! =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation. ----------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- To post to this mailing list, simply send email to: tn-bird@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, send email to: tn-bird-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the Subject field. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TN-Bird Net is owned by the Tennessee Ornithological Society Neither the society(TOS) nor its moderator(s) endorse the views or opinions expressed by the members of this discussion group.
