[TN-Bird] Chimney Swifts--where did they go?

**TOS Fall Meeting and Symposium -- Oct 12-14, 2012**
8/10/12
Tullahoma (Coffee County)

The Highland Rim Chapter of TOS conducted its August Chimney Swift count at the
Tullahoma High School Friday night (8/10/12). We started at 7:00, but the first
birds didn't enter the chimney until 7:46. We stayed until it was too dark to
see (probably about 8:30).

Our final tally of birds entering the chimney was 25. Last year on this same
count we had 1300-1500 birds. Our highest numbers are at the September count
(September 2010 we estimated 5800; September 2011 was 4500).

Has anyone else noticed a drop in Chimney Swift numbers? I have not noticed
anything unusual in their numbers all summer, but I haven't been watching a
roost, either. Are they known to have roosts that grow to very large numbers
and then crash?

I will inquire at the school to see if anything was done over the summer that
might make the chimney less desirable for the birds, but until then, I'm
stumped.

We will count again in September and hope to have better results.

Puzzled,

Laura McCall
