Some brief reports from over the weekend.

APRIL 18
On Friday evening, Robin Barrow, Mike Nelson and I went to FORKS OF THE RIVER
WMA (near Ijams Nature Center in Knox County) in hopes of seeing American
Woodcocks. I have seen them displaying as late as April 25 in past years, but
we did NOT hear or see any on Friday.
We were, however, rewarded with seeing a CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW followed
immediately by a BARRED OWL. I'm sure the owl wasn't chasing the Chuck, but it
did look that way. As the Chuck flew by, you could hear the wings making a
snapping noise with each flap.
We heard 3-5 Chuck-will's-widows calling around us after sunset.

APRIL 20
Sunday morning, Steve Hilty, Janet Lee and Mike Nelson visited KYKER BOTTOMS
REFUGE in sw Blount County. We were pleased to see a great assortment of birds
there.
Highlights:
AMERICAN BITTERN - this bird was in the wet areas along Garland Road, but
closer to the overlook.
Great Egrets
Blue-winged Teal
Broad-winged Hawk
N Bobwhite
Sora
Wilson's Snipe
Greater Yellowlegs (3)
Solitary Sandpiper
a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher nest
Yellow Warbler
Yellow-breasted Chat
Swamp, White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows are still present
a single Indigo Bunting was seen.
