10/5/06
Extreme southwest Henry Co.
Don Manning had a quick look at a bird near his house he thought to be a
Clay-colored Sparrow a couple of mornings ago, and had the bird again this
morning in the same area. We've seen this species several times in TX on
past trips, and Don's certain of the ID. The bird seems to be hanging around
in an area with Palm Warblers, both times he's seen it has been around
09:30, with the birds being gone later in the morning. I will spend a little
time in the area in the morning when I get off work. Don is out of town for
the weekend so won't be able to check on the area anymore.

I don't have my DeLorme here with me at work, but the location is on Perry
Schoolhouse Rd. The following link is a Topozone map showing the location
(Henry TN should be in the upper corner, and Hwy 79 is the main highway
visible, just for reference). The bird has been seen in a harvested corn
field with a couple of brushy areas near the road. This is the area that has
been frequented by the Clay-colored and a number of Palm Warblers, among
other species. There is some other great Sparrow habitat in this area as
well. There are good numbers of Chippies in areas nearby, but the
Clay-colored doesn't seem to be associating with other sparrows, but with
Palm Warblers. This is interesting in that Jeff Wilson's encounters with
Clay-colored Sparrows in the mid-south, have had the bird with Yellow-rumped
Warblers, and not other sparrows as well. Ironically, Jeff and I were just
talking about this the other day during our unsuccessful attempt to relocate
his Cave Swallows.

I will post results of my search in the morning if I'm successful, though
this front that is coming through tonight will no doubt take many birds
south with it on the northerly winds. If I don't have any luck I'll post
something after I get back up to come to work.

Good Birding!!
