I found a colony of Cliff Swallows in northeast Memphis. They have constructed several rows of gourd-shaped mud dwellings under the bog-side eave of two bridges. Each mud gourd has a tubular opening. These birds move very fast, but when they hover at the entrance of their homes, you can see the short square tail and the pale rump spot. Go 240 to the Old Austin Peay Highway ( old, not new ), turn east on Palm Avenue, which curves back south. Go 100 feet to a dirt road which accesses the boggy habitat under the bridges. Pass under the Austin Peay Highway and look back at the west side of the bridge. Then go 50 feet north of that to look at another line of mud gourds under the bog side of the curved access ramp.
