Good morning,
I put in a few hours of hawk watching yesterday, at the Clinch Mountain overlook, on Hwy. 25E in Grainger Co. I arrived at 820 and had to depart at 1110, but I did have some luck. The first hawk did not appear until 1011, and the last observation was at 1058. Of course the conditions were much the same as Ron has reported at Mendota, clear, hazy, sunny skies. It appeared that the broadwings I observed continued to get higher and higher in the 47 minutes I saw them. Here is a list of the days species.
Conditions: clear, sunny, temp. 72-82. wind light from SE, changing to the S at about 1000, 3-7 mph.
Species:
Broad-winged hawk 26
Turkey Vulture 3
Common Crow 3
Blue Jay 11
Morning dove 2
Pileated Woodpecker
Hairy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Chimney Swift 2
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Wren
Cedar Waxwing 22 (1 flock)
Scarlet Tanager 3 (all green w/ black wings)
Blue-headed Vireo
American Goldfinch 4
Indigo Bunting
Blackburnian Warbler 2
Warbler, undf. 12 (LGJ, that would give a "seeet" call and take wing, I never did see them come into the trees, only leaving)
Hope to get back up there in few days, need that cold front to "bottle" the hawks up.
A good day birding to all,
