A friend who is aware of the occurrence of Common Mergansers in Sevier County
notified me that he saw several on the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River
near the Pittman Center TN town limit at MP 3 on Hwy 416. I pursued and found 6
Common Mergansers, and to the best of my ability given the views I had, there
was one adult male in eclipse plumage and 5 juveniles. The photo are of young
of the year: notice the thin rufous feather line through the white cheek.
These are about 3 miles upstream from the group of 11 seen on September 3rd.
Unsure if they are the same; if so a few birds are missing or they went
unobserved by me today. They have strong familial fidelity and I've never seen
them separate into groupings.
