Feb 26, 2012 Blount Co. This afternoon at some marshy ponds on private property downstream from my house I had a COMMON MOORHEN. It shared a small pond bordered by a cattail marsh with 9 hostile Coot. So far I've found mention of very few winter records for this species in TN. I bird this area every week or so and do believe it is a new arrival and not previously overlooked. In addition there are still 1 Sora and 2 Marsh Wrens present. Gadwall at 27 and Green-winged Teal at 36 were both high numbers for the winter. An Orange-crowned Warbler made a brief appearance, hawking for insects. It was a chilly day in the morning, but calm and balmy in the afternoon. I saw one butterfly (Clouded Sulfur) and 2 damselflies (Fragile Forktails). Spring is indeed on it's way. Good birding, Tom Howe Alcoa
