1/28/19Sewanee (Franklin Co) and Camden (Benton Co)
I made the 200 mile trip to Sewanee this morning to the home of Dr. Peters for
my first Evening Grosbeak in the state since '85; I arrived shortly after
sunrise and Frank Fekel was already standing there. Shane Newhold arrived soon
after, and the three of us along with Jim Peters off and on, watched the area
until Frank finally spotted it at the feeder at 11:10 this morning. Jim had
seen it on the opposite side of the house a bit earlier, so some patience is
warranted. It was calling softly at times, so being familiar with the call
could be helpful. I was surprised there were all 3 species of TN Nuthatches
present as well.
Leaving here, I made it to the Camden landfill at 2:45 PM and was rewarded with
the sight of several thousand gulls actively working the area over. Daniel
Redwine recently discovered this site, and should make for some great gulling.
The location is off Mt. Carmel Rd, and the only access is just parking along
the road and looking thru the fence at the activity a few hundred yards away.
It is very challenging, with birds disappearing all the time. But, after about
45 minutes or so I picked up a young Iceland Gull sailing around and had it on
the ground briefly before the workers flushed this group of birds. This bird
was on the pale end of the Iceland spectrum, there was a different darker bird
seen recently here as well. I had at least 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls also.
Just in case anyone was to go.....I had an adult-type bird that was very
suspicous of Mew Gull that I just couldn't stay on in flight long enough to say
for sure it was or wasn't (most likely wasn't but who knows...) Between 3:30
and 4 most of the gulls left en masse, when I left about 4:30 there were still
close to 1000 birds in view, though the Iceland wasn't one of them.
