[TN-Bird] Cormorants in a pond?

This evening, Sept 10, I went out to feed the bluegills and bass in my farm
pond. This pond is about 50 x 60 feet and maybe six feet deep at one end.
The dry weather earlier this summer made the water level go down and tall
grass has grown up at the water's edge in many places. When the water came
up, the grass became semi-submerged. Tonight, as I walked to the edge of
the pond, I heard a sort of squawk from behind a patch of grass and two
birds emerged flying swiftly. They gained altitude quickly and flew away
down the ridge. I only got a quick look at one. It was mostly black with a
little grayish-white on its outstretched neck. Wings, neck and tail were
about the same length. Would cormorants come to a small pond? If not, what
could these have been?
