Janet and I spent a few hours at Couchville Lake in Longhunter State Park just east of Nashville Saturday while the weather provided a more comfortable window. Beautiful afternoon. We observed through our scope appx. 60 Hooded Mergansers for quite some time at fairly close range while they were playing, taking baths, hoods up and down, lots of different angles. It was a great show. They are indeed beautiful. Also present on the lake or in the area were: 2 Red breasted mergansers 1 Pied-billed Grebe 3 Mallards 6 Great Blue Herons 10+ Ring-billed Gulls 3 Bonaparte's Gulls 60+ Black Vultures 30+ Crows Seemed to be a complete absence of other birds although we were focused on the lake. I don't even remember seeing any Chickadees or Titmice. Bertrand Taylor
