Bird report for Cove Lake St Pk. Campbell County 12- 02-02 8:00 am -9:00
am 12-2-03
Also Scott County, TN 9:30-3:30 / Robbins/Elgin/Glenmary communities
In 27 degree temperature this morning I birded Cove Lake St. Pk
(Campbell County, TN) from 8:00-9:00 and had some nice birds and lots of
activity. 6 BREWERS BLACKBIRDS on the ground in a sandy area where
volley ball is played was my first sighting as I parked. They were in the
company of 2 Red-Winged Blackbirds. This was a high number for Cove Lake.

The second find was an immature SNOW GOOSE, my first here this
fall/winter
associating with the Canada Geese.
Hooded Mergansers (18) were behind the campground area, as well as
many Gadwall. The area across the beaver pond (campground area) has
become a roost for Turkey and Black Vultures. Over 100 Yellow-Rumped
Warblers and 40+ Cedar Waxwings and Robins were gorging themselves on the
abundant Cedar berries. I often skip this short loop through the
campground, but must check more often. There were a lot of birds there. I
had 38 species in an hour, which seems insignificant until I tallied the
rest of my day spent in Scott County birding (6 hrs and 96 miles of back
roads) where I had a slim day of 35 species with no rarities. I was
birding near Robbins/Elgin and the Morgan County line for the first time,
and most of the habitat is horrid with thousands of acres of dead pines.
This definitely has had an affect on the bird life in that area of Scott
County.
Despite excellent habitat in many other places near Glenmary, I only saw
6 Eastern Bluebirds all day, (5) of these being in one small area
together, and only 1 in any other part of the county!
I neither saw nor heard a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker or Fox Sparrow all
day. I was lost the last hour and a half as someone had torn down all the
road signs in what seemed to be a maze of rock roads. When I finally
found one sign that said "Chicken Bristle Lane" , I decided it was truly
time to go home on this slow day.
