Alan Troyer, Victor Stoll and I made a quick, unscheduled trip to the
West part of the State this morning for the Curlew Sandpiper. We were not
disappointed. We found it from the Hampton Road side for decent looks
before 7 a.m. then, lost it. Mike Todd refound it just before noon and
everyone got good looks. Awesome bird!
When we were done there we followed Mark Greene out Baptist Church Road
(just North of the Curlew Sandpiper area) where we had a pretty alternate
plumaged Black Tern (FOS) and a close flyover of a calling Whimbrel for
shorebird #21 on the day in just a small part of Lake County! After Mark
left to go try to refind the Whimbrel (somewhere to the North) we had a
flyover White-winged Dove in the same area, also headed North. It was
flying very rapidly and never slowed down. We couldn’t refind it.
At some point in the morning Alan had a Yellow-headed Blackbird sighting
(flyby with Red-winged Blackbirds) at Robinson Bayou, but it was lost in
the excitement of first seeing the Curlew Sandpiper, and Victor and I
never did see it.
All in all not a bad day to spend in Lake County!
