After seeing reports of Grasshopper Sparrows in TN recently, I decided to check
out Bells Bend this morning to see if any had returned to the area. I stopped
at the field where some Grasshopper Sparrows showed up last year. Almost
immediately after getting out of the car, I heard the distinctive insect-like
trill, and was eventually able to get distant scope views. Look for the small
pull-off on the right near the hay bales just before the gray barn, about a
mile past Bells Bend Park (the Harris's Sparrow spot from a couple of years
ago). Familiarity with the call is essential and a scope is highly
recommended. I also picked up a couple of FOS birds including Warbling Vireo
and Blue Grosbeak.
