I ran over to Rankin Bottoms last night to try for the Cattle Egrets that were reported there yesterday. I was supposed to meet my wife to take our dogs for a walk. So I sped over to Rankin Bottoms threw my Kayak in the water and spent 45 minutes furiously paddling around trying to see glimpses of big white birds in the trees. To my dismay I didn't find the Egrets and was laughed at feverously by some local fishermen and women. I did see and hear a few birds. Highlights Include: Greater Scaup 5 (One male and four females. I got good pictures of these birds. From the end of the dirt road I kayaked around the railroad bridge and they were on the water just on the other side.) Warbling Vireo 1 ( I got great looks at this bird) White -eyed Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 5 Prothonotory Warbler 3 (probably more, but I was in a hurry) Prairie Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 2 Cerulean Warbler 1 (As soon as you cross the railroad tracks at the end of Hill road where the pavement meets the dirt road in the trees on the left.) I managed to make it home only a few minutes late and with only a few dirty looks from my wife! I thought that I was going to have to sleep in the doghouse for sure!
