Dougls Lake, Cocke County, July 5, 2007; 12:00 - 3:30 PM
Lake elevation: 975'. That's nearly 20 feet lower than a year ago. We've
enjoyed some rain in the mountains recently, but the water in Douglas Lake
is released into the TVA system to the drought areas downstream. Douglas is
now 7 feet lower than it's highest level in late May. Rankin Bottoms wasn't
half-flooded at that point, now it's planted in soybeans all the way to
Leadvale.

We put in our canoe at the Leadvale boat ramp and went west toward Ten
Islands, where the mudflats are broadening, and we saw most of the birds of
the day, including the early-returning shorebirds.

Partial list:
Wood duck (15)
Double-cr. cormorant (24)
Great blue heron (36)
Great egret (90)
Green heron (9)
Osprey (6)
Bald eagle (1 adult)
Red-tailed hawk
Killdeer (250+)
Lesser yellowlegs
Least sandpiper (4)
Short-billed dowitcher - orange neck, white belly: adult breeding/Atlantic
plumage
Eastern kingbird (5)
also, Blue grosbeak, seen 7/1 at Rankin Bottoms, indicative of how the
habitat has changed there.
