Chad Smith and I spent a productive day seeing many early arrivals with some uncommon finds mixed in for spice Duck River NWR is now loaded with shorebirds, most are on the newly opened area of flooded fields accessed from the northern end of the wildlife loop (newly opened gate) Seen today were numerous Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Solitary and Pectoral Sandpipers, Wilson's Snipes, and a group of 4 LB Dowitchers in one pond with 6 Dunlin in another. Chad saw A Golden Plovers here yesterday. At Pace Point, no gulls were seen, the Ruddy Duck raft is still cruising offshore A single gull floating offshore turned into a first year Great Black-backed! On the drive out, a small bird exploded from the roadside just north of the Bennett's Creek overlook It appeared to be a small dove with a short tail, dark back, no white in the tail We both felt it was most likely a Common Ground-Dove, but the red wings were not seen Moving to Britton Ford, there is a gull roost present that can be seen at a distance from the south side of the slough near the new under construction visitors center This can be accessed by walking across a large field, and contained 6 Laughing Gulls, several Forster's Terns and a single breeding-plumaged Common Tern, in addition to the ususal 3 gulls. There are numerous Savannah and Vesper Sparrows here Still 3 A White Pelicans present at the mouth of Big Sandy with numerous distant ducks Another large congregation of gulls was seen at Little Eagle Creek, both Forster's and Common Terns and Laughing Gulls here also One A Golden Plover seen on the flats The gull roost at the island off Paris Landing was loaded with birds, best was the same? adult Lesser Black-backed seen last week Also in various areas were newly arrived Cliff Swallows, WE Vireos, a raft of 6 RB Mergansers, etc Terry Witt Murfreesboro Tn =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to SIGN YOUR MESSAGE with first and last name, CITY (TOWN) and state abbreviation.
