Thorny Cypress WMA, Dyer Co.

This morning I visited Thorny Cypress WMA on Yarbro Road in Dyer County where
the Whimbrel was seen yesterday and saw a TWRA truck parked out near the T6
impoundment. I walked out and came up behind the truck just as it was pulling
away. After a few minutes of scanning, I heard a Whimbrel call and the bird got
up and flew across the water and landed out in the middle of a dry, open field.
I watched it for about 5 minutes and then it got up and flew to the southeast
and went down in the vicinity of the eastern end of the T5 impoundment. When I
got back to the truck I talked to Carl Wirwa with TWRA (who I had seen in the
truck earlier) and he said there was a small amount of water at the east end of
T5 where I had seen the bird fly. Hopefully we'll get some rain tomorrow to
help replenish these last few wet areas before the water is gone! Hopefully the
bird will stick around a few more days for others to see. Nice bird!

There were lots of Killdeer and Great Egrets in the wet areas and lots of
Dickcissels around calling. I heard a couple of Grasshopper Sparrows singing
and saw lots of Indigo Buntings and a few Blue Grosbeaks as well.

Thanks to Patrick Lemons of TWRA for finding and reporting the bird and to
Scott Somershoe for getting the word out. This was my first Whimbrel for
Tennessee despite several attempts in the past to refind birds that Jeff Wilson
and/or Glen Criswell had found. I remember Jeff and Glen finding a bird at the
jct. of the Great River Road and Hwy 103 in Dyer County a few years back and
that's the only other Dyer Co. record that I'm aware of but those guys may have
others. There are several records for Lake County with dates ranging from 13
May to 1 June. There is at least one July record for Island 13 in Lake County.
On 22-23 May 1999, Jeff & Glen had 9 birds on Island 13 and on 23 May 1989,
Glen had 15 birds on Island 13. It definitely appears that this bird showing up
now is no accident as yesterday was 22 May!

Good birding,
