After getting so-so views of the ferruginous hawk yesterday, I swung through Eagleville (Rutherford Co.) again. Just as I was leaving I stopped to scan one end of a field I hadn't looked at before and found 6 American Golden Plovers. The birds were in the muddy field at Hwy 99 and Swamp Rd. Other shorebirds: 300+ Killdeer (estimate, likely very low) 265 Wilson's Snipe - 65+ in one field, and easily 200+ in the muddy field at Hwy 99 and Swamp Rd. By far the most I've ever seen in one place. 357+ Pectoral Sandpipers - I had a flock of 157 in a muddy field on Swamp Rd at North Lane, and easily 200 more in the above field on Swamp/Hwy 99 (100 in one flock, plus many more across the field). Impressive numbers for Rutherford Co! Well, impressive since we hadn't really birded this area much until this past year and don't know the potential. Once the fields dry and get plowed, then we get a heavy rain in April or early May, a couple of these fields could hold some real goodies. Just gotta keep looking. Good birding!
