Yesterday, February 13, 2003 there were two Eastern Bluebirds at the Bluebird box in my yard. The first time I have seen them all winter. They seemed to be making a decision about the appropriateness of this box as they have for the last several years. Last year was the first time they actually built a complete nest in it. However, during the whole of last season the Bluebirds and later with their young guarded this box. Squirrels and all other birds were chased away immediately by the whole family in mass if they touched this box. It was interesting to sit on the patio and just watch to see the squirrels try to out maneuver this family. The Bluebirds seemed to always be successful. They worked as a unit so nicely.
