June 19, 2003 Ensley Bottoms, Shelby Co TN I had about 45 minutes to "waste" at the pits. I saw only one Western Kingbird to the east of the Steam Plant. These birds may have brought off young and as usual fled the Shrike stronghold for safer areas. There are Black-necked Stilts everywhere with 20 obvious nests and I'm sure more hidden. The young from the first nesting are almost the size of the adults already but their huge knees give them away. There will be new arrivals soon and nest building will continue into August hopefully. There were 6 White-rumped Sandpipers on the flats. Five were nervously flying around while one fed by itself. This bird had lost its left leg below the joint. Good Birding!!! Jeff R.
