Today, Sept 8, the Knoxville News Sentinel published a front-page article about
Bob Doochin, a Nashville businessman who is making efforts to revive the
Bobwhite Quail population. A worthy cause, and to be celebrated.
However, Mr. Doochin (and the writer, Jordan Buie), have some really mixed-up
ideas about the Passenger Pigeon. In a long digression, they refer to the bird
as the “carrier pigeon” or “passenger or messenger pigeon, known for its
ability to deliver messages across long distances.” From that point on, they
use “carrier pigeon” to recount the story of the death of the last one in 1914.
Can someone with more serious bird credentials than I inform them publicly of
their error?
