While working near the area I noticed a field being cut by large mowers. I looked closer and saw a large number of kites actively catching insects being thrown around by the mowers. I watched the birds for almost thirty minutes hoping to see a Swallow-tailed Kite, but all were Mississippi Kites. I was able to count over 50 individual birds on Friday and almost as many on Saturday. I have been working with kites for over 20 years and this was the largest number of birds I have ever seen in one flock. Considering that only a few years ago a single kite observation was news in the Shelby County area, groups of over 50 birds is really something. Hopefully their numbers will continue to grow in the area.
