17 February 2003
Wal-Mart Distribution Center,
Lick Creek Bottoms Wildlife Management Area, etc.
Greene County, TN

Sick of spacecraft disasters, terrorism alerts, and warmongering, I
escaped for a blessed few hours today into the flooded watershed of Lick
Creek in western Greene County. The weather seemed to be keeping
everyone out but me and the birds--just what I hoped. A slow walk
around the ponds at Wal-Mart combined with quick forays at two of the
LCBWMA units and elsewhere was just the tonic I needed. By early
afternoon, when I was due back in Greeneville, I had been graced by a
gentle outpouring of birds:

Canada Goose (33);
Mallard (47);
American Black Duck (5);
Gadwall (12);
Green-winged Teal (7);
American Wigeon (2);
Northern Pintail (24);
Northern Shoveler (3);
Ring-necked Duck (7);
Hooded Merganser (4);
Wood Duck (9);
Northern Harrier (2);
Cooper's Hawk;
Wilson's Snipe (2);
Ring-billed Gull (8);
Red-headed Woodpecker;
Marsh Wren (third pond at WMDC);
American Pipit;
Palm Warbler (third pond at WMDC);
large mixed flocks of grackles, blackbirds, and cowbirds.

Some fine day not too far down the calendar, woodcock will again dance
their crazy song in the evening, and swallows cut dinner from the pale
winter sky . . . .

Don Miller,
Greeneville, TN
