Snowed in! Wonderful time to observe and study the birds....which are
constantly and heavily feeding. The seed disappears too quickly.
A challenge for me: This Goldfinch like bird has had me guessing for a week or
two, now. Two or three have occasionally been seen in a flock of 28+
American Goldfinches. In all my experiences this was a Pine Siskin, however
there should have been some obvious yellow. Even though I looked and looked,
not even one tiny spot of yellow could be seen..

Today with several inches of snow, probably 8+ inches and continuing to fall,
there are hoards of Goldfinches which includes at least 4 or 5 Pine Siskins. A
couple of them do have yellow wingbars. And there are several with white
wingbars. I finally found a book that seems to confirm that Pine Siskins do
not have to have the yellow on them. Sibley's Guide to Birds, page 534, shows
the female adult with white wingbars and no yellow. This book also shows the
male with yellow wingbars. All the other books I have checked only show them
with yellow wingbars.

However, the fault may be mine since I have been busy and have not taken the
time to really explore this! But I am puzzled that all the books do not picture
a Pine Siskin with white wingbars.

I have had one female Purple Finch on a few occasions this fall. Today there
are two male Purple Finches feeding. No females observed at this time.. though.
Fewer than usual House Finches have visited my feeders this whole year.
