I started at the Duck River Bottoms at daylight, (from Tie Landing by
boat) slogging across what seemed like miles of deep, sloppy, mud to
photograph the continuing Glossy Ibis. There were a couple hundred
shorebirds, with mostly Pecs, plus Stilt(12), Baird’s(3), Sanderling(2),
Semipalmated Plover(4), Black-bellied Plover(1), Western(1), Semisand(12),
Least(4), and lots of Killdeer. As I was heading out to do a Pe-Lake-gic
trip up the river I got a call from Alan Troyer, who had just shown up at
Tie Landing and wanted in. After picking him up we headed straight to the
Brown Booby, photograghing a Common Tern on the way. The Booby was lower
down on the same perch and allowed great photo ops. It is straight out from
the swim beach/rec area at Eva. About that time a heavy band of storms came
up and we sheltered in a picnic pavilion in Eva for a couple hours. At 1:00
p.m. a gap in the rain allowed us to head back. As we passed the pump
station/pool 1 a juvenile Sabine’s Gull was flying around and landing on
the water. After 10 minutes it disappeared to the North! Pretty awesome
bird for Tennessee! As we got back to Tie Landing the rain set in right on
cue!
